As Oscar reminded us, right now tagged skills already double their learning rate (since the Shuttle Bay release if I'm not mistaken). Let's keep in mind we're in early access - not everything can be adressed at once and the game has yet to be complete. This makes a tagged combat skill feel qualitatively different from an untagged one, bringing them into line with the non-combat skills, but it'll take the most effort to implement. buff Bullseye and make it only useable starting from Rifle 5, add 10 recoil control to SMGs starting from SMG 4 etc. This solves the core issue, but it affects everyone and is a bit boring.Ĥ) Add breakpoints to combat skills, e.g. This ignores the core issue but it'll make INT stronger and balance-wise, it has the advantage of only affecting the player's party.ģ) Increase the effect of skill level on derived attributes, e.g. Still, leaving a trap this big can't be good for the game.Ģ) Significantly increase the XP gain from INT. INT being of little value to combat characters can be argued to make real-world sense, and high INT characters are certainly viable in the hands of experienced players. So what can/should be done about it? Here are a few suggestions, sorted by estimated difficulty of implementation (and correspondingly, by coolness):ġ) Nothing. each point in PER gives the same accuracy as a weapon skill level, making tagging weapon skills especially bad) and the conclusion that spending stat points on INT for a combat character is a noob trap seems inescapable. Combine this with the fact that other stats contribute to combat skills directly (e.g. Dialogue skill checks are almost always success/fail so one extra skill level makes all the difference there, but in combat it's just extra 5% accuracy or the like, so any combat encounter which is winnable with tagged combat skills is almost certainly winnable with untagged ones. This is because tagging a skill is designed to give a 1-2 level advantage, and in practice it's 1 level most of the time unless you take Mastermind. As I've argued here and here, INT is a dump stat for combat characters.
